Today, after a year and a half of negative growth, Britain finally left recession.
While any recovery is good news, these very weak figures show that Gordon Brown’s promise that Britain “would lead the world out of recession” turned out to be a cruel deceit – we were one of the first major economies to enter recession and the last in the G20 to leave it.

Campaigning for the General Election is now really starting to ramp up, but with the year we’ve just had in politics it’s clear it can’t be done in the same old way.

My curry with Pickles
Hot and spicy may not be the normal words used to describe an evening with Eric Pickles, but this week they were. MyConservatives.com is the fantastic online campaigning resource that we launched at Conference last year and I managed to call the most voters before Christmas. The awesome prize for my hundreds of calls was curry with our legendary Party Chairman Eric Pickles MP!

In Touch Newsletter: This Year is Election Year
Eric Pickles: "2010 is a year for change, and your vote can help bring about this change to the UK. With the guarantee of a General Election less than 6 months away it is crucial that all eligible overseas voters register to vote before it is too late. With a large number of Parliamentary seats likely to be decided by a handful of votes, this is the election where YOU can make a real difference to the result."

Dubai, January 10 2010 – Andrew Mitchell MP, Britain's Shadow Secretary of State for International Development visited British Conservatives and leading businessmen at the Capital Club in Dubai International Financial Centre yesterday.
Returning from a trip to Pakistan he spoke on the importance of peace and stability as an essential first step in development for the bottom billion of the world's population and reaffirmed the Tories commitment to spending 0.7% of GDP on international development.
He defended this action at a time when 25% of all British government spending is debt funded by highlighting that encouraging development will further global stability and this is in Britain's long-term interest.
On British government spending he said that cuts are inevitable but the Conservatives would refrain from taxing expatriates on overseas earnings. When challenged on increasing the maximum number of tax free days for UK residence, Mr Mitchell said that this would not be a priority but encouraged Middle East residents to make their case
Andrew Mitchell MP closed his remarks by highlighting just how close the general election will be and encouraged all Britons abroad to register to vote through www.dontleaveyourvoteathome.com
Zulfi Hydari, Co-Chairman of Conservatives Abroad in Dubai said, “We are delighted Andrew Mitchell MP was able to make time in his busy schedule to address a distinguished group of British Conservatives and leading businessmen at the Capital Club.”
Mr. Hydari added, “We enjoyed strong turnout and Mr. Mitchell’s address was very well received.”
David Haigh, Co-Chairman said, “Our guests were given an opportunity to question Mr. Mitchell on various policy issues including, energy, immigration, taxation and defense. The feedback was very positive and we look forward to continuing our efforts to encourage voter registration in the run up to the next election.”
