You've probably heard the announcement that Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh will pay State Visits to the UAE and Oman this Autumn.
This will be the second visit by The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh to both Oman and the United Arab Emirates. The previous visit took place in 1979. This year’s visit to Oman will mark the occasion of the 40th year of the reign of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said.
What you may not know is that The Queen surprisingly cancelled a previously planned visit to Dubai and Abu Dhabi in March 2009 because of an overburdened work schedule which included a state visit to Britain by the President of Mexico and the gathering of G20 leaders in London around the same time.
It was unusual as it was the first time in recent memory that a state visit was cancelled for reasons other than war or terrorism.

Mideast investors consider BP move
Middle East investors are thought to be mulling over a possible investment in stricken oil giant BP, it was reported on Sunday.
As problems continue to hit the company amid the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, informed sources said proposals from the region had already been made to BP advisers in London, UAE daily The National reported.
“BP knows there is potential support from the Middle East,” a source told the paper, adding that Middle East investors would also consider buying key assets from BP.
The company's balance sheet has been badly damaged by the cost of cleaning up the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico with estimates putting the clean-up cost as high as $60bn.

Wealthy UAE investors are among the biggest buyers of luxury properties in London, especially in the poshest areas of Belgravia, Hyde Park and Knightsbridge, a new report has revealed.
In a new study of the English capital's real estate market, consultants Knight Frank said UAE investors were sixth in a list of international buyers.
The report said overseas buyers now accounted for more than 50 percent of all prime London residential purchases, with that figure rising to 68 percent in the homes valued at more than GBP5m.

“Deep friendship between the UK and UAE” – PM
Prime Minister David Cameron has said the friendship between the United Arab Emirates and UK is deep and is based on a “unique, shared history and common interests”.
The PM completed his visit to the UAE on Saturday 12 June after meeting President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and H.H. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces.
He also met members of the UAE Cabinet and senior state officials during his brief visit to the country.
This was one of Mr Cameron’s first overseas visits as Prime Minister, highlighting the importance that the UK government attaches to the UK-UAE relationship.

Dubai, January 10 2010 – Andrew Mitchell MP, Britain's Shadow Secretary of State for International Development visited British Conservatives and leading businessmen at the Capital Club in Dubai International Financial Centre yesterday.
Returning from a trip to Pakistan he spoke on the importance of peace and stability as an essential first step in development for the bottom billion of the world's population and reaffirmed the Tories commitment to spending 0.7% of GDP on international development.
He defended this action at a time when 25% of all British government spending is debt funded by highlighting that encouraging development will further global stability and this is in Britain's long-term interest.
On British government spending he said that cuts are inevitable but the Conservatives would refrain from taxing expatriates on overseas earnings. When challenged on increasing the maximum number of tax free days for UK residence, Mr Mitchell said that this would not be a priority but encouraged Middle East residents to make their case

Andrew Mitchell MP is the Shadow Secretary of State for International Development as well as the Shadow Cabinet Member with responsibility for Birmingham. Andrew is 53, married with two daughters. He was educated at Rugby School and Cambridge University, where he studied history and was elected as President of the Cambridge Union in 1978. Andrew served in the Army (Royal Tank Regiment) before joining Lazard where he worked with British companies seeking large-scale overseas contracts.
He was the Member of Parliament for Gedling from 1987 to 1997. During this period he held office as a Government Whip and as Minister for Social Security. He also served as a Vice-Chairman of the Conservative Party from 1992 to 1993. In 2001 he was re-elected to Parliament as MP for Sutton Coldfield. In November 2003, he was appointed Shadow Minister for Economic Affairs. From September 2004 until the end of the Parliamentary term, he was Shadow Minister for Home Affairs. Following the General Election in May 2005 Andrew joined the Shadow Cabinet and was appointed Shadow Secretary of State for International Development. An experienced and highly effective MP and former Government Minister.

Shadow Secretary of State for Defence with Conservatives Abroad in Dubai
British Conservatives Abroad living in Dubai met with the Shadow Secretary of State for Defence, Dr Liam Fox MP who was visiting Dubai. Dr Fox praised the work that Gulf Tories were doing to encourage expatriates living in the Gulf to participate in the next UK general election that is waiting to be called.Dr Fox said “we really appreciate the work of the Gulf Tories that enables Britons living abroad to keep closely in touch with their political interests in the UK, this also strengthens the much valued political and business links in the Gulf”.
